Video exports in web editors, large uploads, report generation and cloud builds have one thing in common: they take a long time and need nothing from you while they run. That is exactly when a browser tab or the screen decides you've left.
Before you start
- Plug in. Laptops throttle and sleep sooner on battery.
- Keep the tab open and visible if the tool needs it. Some web apps slow down or pause in background tabs.
- Pause updates. A scheduled restart ends a job faster than any timer.
- Check your connection. A dropped network ends uploads quietly.
While it runs
Keep the screen on and the page showing activity. A browser extension that holds a screen wake lock and simulates small page activity covers both for the tab you're using.
For desktop software
If the long job is a desktop render or export, the browser isn't involved. Set the power plan to keep the PC awake, or use a system-level keep-awake utility, because an extension can't reach other programs.
When you come back
Look at the output before you assume it worked. Many tools finish with a warning that's easy to miss if you return hours later. If you used the Away Brief, glance at it too: it lists what came in while you were gone.
